On November 20, Nanjing University organized the second Research Academic Planning Training (for Science, Engineering and Medical disciplines). Tan Tieniu, Chair of NJU CPC Council and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), attended the training and delivered a speech.
Seven leading experts from different disciplines and institutions were invited to deliver reports for Nanjing University scholars, covering key areas such as materials, energy, life sciences, health, and intelligent computing, spanning the entire innovation chain from free exploration and strategic assessment to industrial integration. Zheng Hairong, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC NJU Committee, Vice President of NJU and Academician of the CAS chaired the training.

In his address, Tan Tieniu expressed sincere gratitude to all academicians and experts who traveled from afar to support the event. He briefly reviewed the achievements and responses from the first Research and Academic Planning Training for science, engineering, and medical disciplines. To better position oneself in the new era, face new backgrounds, target new national needs, and achieve new breakthroughs to truly boost the development of new quality productive forces, Tan Tieniu required NJU faculty to be guided by national needs, follow principles of pioneering innovation, aim at scaling new heights, and be supported by persistent effort in their research planning. He hoped everyone would cherish this training opportunity, study earnestly, discuss in depth, inspire each other, further enhance their research planning capabilities, and jointly promote the university's research undertakings to new heights, making new and greater contributions to accelerating high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and advancing the building of a strong country and national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization.

Xue Qikun, Academician of the CAS and President of Southern University of Science and Technology, focused on the core proposition of "Serving the Nation from the Frontier and Bravely Shouldering the Mission of Scientific and Technological Innovation of the Times," explaining the historical responsibilities and strategic directions of scientific and technological workers in the new era, and profoundly analyzing the contemporary connotations of scientific and technological innovation from the dual perspectives of national strategy and scientific frontiers.

Gan Yong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and former Vice President of the CAE, delivered a report on "Thoughts on the Development of Key New Materials in the Late Stage of Industrialization," guiding everyone through the strategic directions of new materials development and revealing the strategic pivotal role of new materials in national industrial upgrading, providing key guidance for future new materials industrialization planning.

Liu Zhongmin, Academician of the CAE and Director of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics at the CAS, outlined the energy technology pathways and industrial transformation landscape under the "dual carbon" goals with his report "Thoughts and Practices on Energy Transition and Industrial Upgrading under the 'Dual Carbon' Background," demonstrating the strategic value of technology in supporting national energy security.

Wang Jian, Academician of the CAE and Director of Zhejiang Lab, focused on the theme of "Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Innovation," reviewing the development history of artificial intelligence, explaining the relationship between computing and artificial intelligence, and emphasizing the importance of going from 1 to 100, which is also the process of technology being accepted by society.

Liu Qing, Director of the National Innovation Center par Excellence, with his report "Deep Integration of Scientific and Technological Innovation and Industrial Innovation—A Key Path for Developing New Quality Productive Forces," analyzed the core mechanisms for opening up innovation chains and cultivating new quality productive forces, pointing out the practical path to achieve deep integration of scientific and technological innovation with industrial innovation, thereby generating new quality productive forces.

Song Baoliang, Academician of the CAS and Executive Vice President of Wuhan University, with his report "Challenges in Biomedical Research," led everyone to face major scientific issues and future breakthrough points in the field of life and health, revealing the profundity and complexity of biomedical research through cholesterol metabolism research, and demonstrating confidence and prospects for overcoming human disease challenges through persistent basic research.

Zheng Nanfeng, Academician of the CAS and Dean of the College of Energy at Xiamen University, through his report "From Free Exploration to Two-way Empowerment: Integration of Basic Research and Industrial Innovation," revealed a new paradigm of mutual promotion between high-level scientific research and high-quality development, profoundly interpreting how basic research can mutually stimulate and empower industrial needs.

Zheng Hairong, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC NJU Committee, Vice President of NJU, and Academician of the CAS, chaired the training session.

This training session was held in the Sanjiang Hall of the International Conference Center at the Xianlin Campus, with video sub-venues set up at the Computer Building of the Xianlin Campus and the Nanyong Building of the Suzhou Campus. Nearly a thousand faculty members from science, engineering, and medical disciplines of Nanjing University participated in the training.
